University of Minnesota Women's Gymnastics Jan 25, 2014 Photos

The University of Minnesota had a home meet with Illinois last night, 1/25/14. It was a fun meet, Illinois has a great team, and it was very close, with the Gophers winning at the end, after their great floor sets. I just love the Gophers' choice of music! It is so strong and the choreography of all the women's routines is just so good. And the tumbling was great last night.

I am using an old school film camera. an old 35mm Minolta SLR with a non zoom, cheaper-end telephoto lens. I am trying to capture action shots, but it is difficult with the equipment I'm using. For sure it produces better pictures than the digital camera I was using, but I'm still not happy with how the pictures are turning out. I'm using a 400 speed film, which does produce grainy enlargements, but does stop the action better than 200 speed. Maybe I'll try an even faster speed film next time, but that will mean even more grain. Maybe I'll check into a digital SLR, but for now that's just a dream!

Here are some more photos from the meet at the Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota held Jan 11, 2014.  I need to work on capturing hands, feet, etc, in the frame! Also, need to eliminate any shutter shaking. Maybe need to consider using a tripod.  I was way too far away from the uneven bars to get good photos. So I made kind of an artistic shot of a change grip handstand.

Here are some photos from the University of Minnesota Women's gymnastics three team meet on Jan. 11, 2014. University of Minnesota vs. Air Force Academy and Lindenwood. I'm still editing some other ones.  I used my old school 35mm Minolta with 400 speed film, because my digital camera cannot seem to snap the shutter when I want it to...there is too much of a delay.  I'm having fun trying to capture some good pictures and it's still a learning experience.

Golden Gophers University of Minnesota Women's Gymnastics Team won last night

Congrats to the Golden Gopher Women Gymnasts, winning the meet last night with a total score of 194.425.  I will post some pictures soon. I used a 35mm regular camera this time with a fast speed film, so hope they turn out better. The attendance was 1,608. The Gophers did not fare too well on bars, a lot of gymnasts fell off. They did outstanding on the floor though. Excellent choreography, routines, and music! The routines just kept getting better and better and the judges had no way of giving more points, and one judge gave a 10.0. Exciting!

Next home meet is 1/25/14 against Illinois.

First 2014 Women's Gymnastics Meet tonight at the University of Minnesota

The Women's Gymnastics Team at the University of Minnesota will be competing tonight in Minneapolis.  Here is a great article by Michael Molde in the Winter 2014 issue of Ski-U-Mah, about senior gymnast, Dusti Russell.

The meet tonight is against Air Force Academy and Lindenwood.

College Gymnastics - University of Minnesota vs Ohio State March 16, 2013

U of M Gophers Win This Evening's Meet against Ohio State

The March 16, 2013 meet at the University of Minnesota showcased a lot of talented gymnasts. Minnesota Wins! It was an exciting meet, starting at 6:00 p.m tonight. The score was 197.225 Minnesota and 195.050 Ohio State. The Gophers scored 9.80 and above in all four events, a super strong showing! I think the judging was a little generous, especially on beam. Some competitors had more deductions than 0.2, in my opinion. The highlight of the meet was the floor. Ohio State has some great tumblers, and excellent choreography. Minnesota was really good too, especially Lindsay Mable's routine.

Both teams sported pink leotards, commemorating breast cancer awareness. But it did cause for some confusion as to which team we needed to be cheering for, especially since I brought a guest who was not familiar with the Gophers.

The All Around Winner was Gopher Lindsay Mable with a score of 39.525, Gopher Cierra Tomson was second with 39.350 and Melanie Shaffer of Ohio State was third with 39.175.

At the end of the meet, there was a ceremony for Gopher seniors Janell Campbell and Shannon Golich. The program had a nice interview with both women. All in all it was a great meet and I'm sorry to have to wait until next year to see more live College Gymnastics. I think coach Meg Stephenson said that Regionals would be held in Minnesota next year?

Should be a great meet. I'm going to bring a different camera and hopefully take some better photos.  I haven't followed Ohio State since my former teammate in Indiana, and Ohio State great, Tracy Rinker competed 1981 to 1984.

Competing for the Gophers were  Janell Campbell, Jenny Covers, Lucy Ennis, Shannon Golich, Briana Jones, Dusti Russell, Kylie Schermann, Kayla Slechta, and Cierra Tomson.

The program that was sold at the meet was really beautiful. It was a glossy 11x15 poster featuring Gopher gymnast Cierra Tomson.

This was the first meet I had been to this year and I thought the University of Minnesota Team looked excellent! My photos didn't turn out as good as I wanted and I will try a different camera at tomorrow's meet.
